There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.</font></em></font></p> <p lang="en-US" align="right" style="margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0.5in; margin-bottom: 0in"><font color="#000000"><em>Luke 17:17-18 KJV</em></font></p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Christians often pay an enormous price in time, talent, treasure, and even lifeblood, to share the Gospel. All too often, there is little visible return on our investment. Why do we bother?</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">We work for the One and the one. God directs us to work in His harvest. His Word should be enough for any obedient son or daughter of God. He also richly blesses those who serve Him in sincerity and faithfulness.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">We also work for the one who responds. The hours of blood, sweat and tears are a small price to pay for a soul redeemed from eternal death. The joy of a new Gospel sibling should brighten the soul and spirit of any believer.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">The days, and nights, are often long and hard. The return on investment seems dismal too much of the time. Still we soldier on, in joy and hope. For the here and now, and the there and then..</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">We work for the One. We labor, just for one. And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil. </em></font></p> <p lang="en-US" align="right" style="margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0.5in; margin-bottom: 0in"><font color="#000000"><em>Jonah 4:1-2 KJV</em></font></p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Jonah reacted with rage when the city of Nineveh repented. Despite his own disobedience, Jonah found it easy to condemn others. Ignoring his own faults and judgmental nature, the prophet choose to resent sincere and true repentance.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Has it ever happened in your world? Has someone you thought unworthy been redeemed by God? Did you find yourself resenting God’s mercy and grace towards others?</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">The notorious capital of Assyria was not known for its purity or goodness. The short lived city and nation were obliterated, per Biblical prophecy, in 612 BC. Still, for a time, the city experienced revival and restoration through Jonah’s crusade.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Christians are called to obedience in reaching the lost with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Christians are also called to graciously accept those who are restored by God’s mercy. Anything else is not a true reflection of God’s love.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">The book of Jonah is an object lesson in forgiveness and restoration. Those who repent to God receive God’s forgiveness. It’s just that easy. They are some of His harshest statements regarding mortal men. This raises the question, who did Jesus single out for such bitter rebuke and harsh reproof?</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Not the adulterous woman (John 8: 2-11). Jesus clearly refused to condemn her, only her sin.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Not Zacchaeus the thieving tax collector and Roman collaborator (Luke 19: 1-10). Jesus enjoyed a meal in his home, and led him to repentance.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Not the father of the demon-possessed boy (Mark 9: 17-27). Jesus cast out the demon, despite the father’s imperfect faith.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Jesus reserved his most bitter rebukes and chastisement for the religious leaders. He repeatedly called them on their hypocrisy. Jesus made sure to announce their false and legalistic practices.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">The thieves, prostitutes and reprobates flocked to Jesus and listened to his every word. Many of Israel’s sinners repented on hearing Jesus’ Gospel. The Pharisees ridiculed Him. The Sadducees opposed Him.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">God opens His arms wide to sinners. He makes innocent those who accept Jesus’ redemption from sin. Those who do not accept salvation remain guilty.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Jesus’ righteousness can convict and condemn the guilty. Jesus’ love is so great that He is willing to redeem the sinner from sin. He found himself face down in the mud and muck of a pigpen. Hungry and humiliated, his eyes scanned the horizon for something good. Something better.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Luke 15: 11-32 is a favorite story among Christians. Not because of the prodigal’s suffering. Instead, God’s people love the glory and celebration of this story.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Over the snorts of foreign pigs, “Junior” could hear the laughter of kith and kin. Covered in filth, the boy remembered the deliciousness of Momma’s kitchen. Suddenly, even the memory of Poppa’s voice is a precious comfort.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Home. In glorious warmth and brilliant colors, the place he rejected called him. With hope. In love.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Perhaps your life has become a pigpen. That’s okay. He is there, shining in beauty and joy. God has been waiting for you to notice He has been there all along.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">God calls to you. With hope. In love. The mud and muck of your life can not hide His glory. Not if you decide to look. Not if you choose to listen.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Yesterday doesn’t matter. God has never rejected you. God calls you home. Won’t you answer?</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in"><strong>Think</strong><strong>:</strong> God loves me. It was always unpleasant. In fact, it almost always <em>hurt</em>. Still, I would not be the man I am today without Momma and Poppa’s correction.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">As I grew older, I understood how much I needed correction and discipline. The tongue lashings and belt strokes taught me obedience and self-control, wisdom and judgment. In the end, my life is better and happier because of their “teaching.”</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">I don’t often enough thank God for His correction and admonishments in my life. The “strokes” I have received from Him have kept me in His Way and Will. His welts, on the back side of my heart, have become badges of honor on the front side of my soul.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">We know these words of Eliphaz are mis-applied toward Job’s situation. They are still words that should guide the life of every Christian. God corrects whom He loves.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">God’s true sons and daughters accept His correction. The best among us respond with joy and thanksgiving. The rest of us submit with humility and obedience.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">God loves you. The best evidence of His love is His correction. The kid may even be dealing with real hardships and frustrations. Still, the child owes his or her parent respect and confidence. Whether or not the kid understands. Whether or not the child agrees. Trauma and travail, accusation and reproof, had descended on him. Despite a lifetime of seeking God and His holiness. It’s no surprise that his hurt, confusion and anger led him to an attitude against God.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Your circumstances may hurt beyond anything you thought possible. Whether or not you understand. Whether or not you agree. God remains God.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Sometimes, we forget we live privileged lives. As Christians, we live in His love and grace. We sometimes take for granted, or forget, that God is still the ultimate source of holiness, authority and judgment. “You <em>will </em>watch your tone with <em>Him.</em>”</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Pour your heart out to Him. After catastrophic losses of wealth, family and health you might expect anyone’s faith to waiver. Then Job’s friends descended on him with accusations and rebukes.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Job held to God, through his tears and heartbreak. His every response pointed back to his real source. Not even foolish friends could sway Job’s faith.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Of course, Job’s losses and trials hurt. Human beings feel the pain and grieve their losses. The real answer to the test is your response. Do you love God’s gifts or do you love God?</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">It is in your season of loss and trial that you find, or forge, your real character. It’s easy to play the righteous faith-bearer while the money flows and the family is fine. The real test comes when disasters and sorrows compete for dominance in your life.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Job cried a lot of tears. Depression, than rage, flowed through his soul. Still, one thing remained the same: His faith in God.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">No matter what is going on in your life, hold onto your faith. Worship God because He is good, not because He provides good. I processed out without fanfare. Our transactions completed, the corporation and I went our separate ways. “It’s not personal, it’s just business.”</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in"> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">One of the men I worked with, a Gospel brother, met with me privately. He quietly pressed into my hands a tub of peppermints and a greeting card. “I’ll miss you.”</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in"> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Acknowledgment. Confirmation. Kindness. Honor. All from a Godly man I respect and trust.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in"> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">The warmth of his gesture is in stark contrast to the world’s coldness. For the price of a “value meal” he bought, and brought, joy and warmth into my life. It’s the little kindnesses that turn an unrelated group into close-knit family. The local church can be a place of warmness and belonging. The benefit to my heart? You would expect their deep level of love and tenderness to spring only from a natural-born relationship. Faithful and loyal, they have cared for “Mom and Dad” despite sickness and through Dad’s funeral.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Mom and Dad’s lifetime of Godly living and selfless service have not been ignored by heaven. Without children in their marriage, they received a son and daughter who blessed their hearts and souls. The tears of Mom’s loss are mingled with the tears of her gratitude.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Nothing you give up in pursuit of Christ is ever lost. The accountancy of heaven won’t allow it. The promises of Scripture guarantee it.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">That doesn’t stop our hearts and minds from regretting short-term losses. We’re human enough to cry when leaving something precious on the altar. You may not expect the form or format, but His reimbursement to your heart and soul will be deep and real.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">God rewards His faithful children. Don’t be afraid to leave anything in His Hands. The synagogue leader desperately needed and wanted Jesus to heal his sick little girl. The crowd wanted more spectacle and wonder.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">She pressed her way toward Jesus. The burden of her disease had robbed her of cash, joy and livelihood. At the end, her only remaining possessions were faith and hope.</p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Faith is the currency of heaven. Hope is the billfold for such precious money. If anything compels God, it is our willingness to believe His Word and act in response.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">She pressed forward for her change. She didn’t want attention. She didn’t seek Jesus’ touch or prayer. All she needed was an opportunity to spend her faith on the Godly desire of her heart. God-in-flesh felt the power flow through Him.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Despite the massive throng. In spite of the urgent need before Him. Jesus made time. She spent her faith on a miracle and Jesus would not let her divine purchase go unnoticed.</p> <p align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0in">Your faith is the currency of heaven. Even your small allowance, wadded in the corner of your hope, is worth more than anyone can imagine.
